Ask Dr. Racquetball

Here are some questions that all of us have about the great game of racquetball I have received via e-mails, during practices and at tournaments. These questions range from the standard to the bizarre, so read and enjoy!

What do you consider to be the most important aspect to develop as a beginner?

I think it is very important to learn how to shoot straight with a good rip. So I suggest going onto the court solo and practicing many down the line passes with a complete follow through with a powerful rip.

Hi, I am a school teacher and what would you do if you had a class to teach and have 24 kids and 12 racquets?

The 12 kids can play brief games up to 11 and the other 12 kids can work on shadow drills.

My drive serve is just not clicking for me, can you please come look at it before my next match, Doc?

Sure. After looking at several of your drive serve, I found three culprits:

(1)You are dropping the ball at an angle and not bending your knees to get down to the same level as the ball’s drop.
(2) Your eyes are not following the ball all the way from racquet contact point, to front wall target, to your opponent in the back.
(3) You are babying your follow through slightly, you need to just let your follow through go and rip the ball!
