Ask Dr. Racquetball

What is your warm up like? And can you give us any tips to help us warm up properly and get ready for our matches?

I like to keep my warm up the same because we are all animals of habit. It is important to develop and keep a warm-up routine that will warm up your body and not shock it.

I like to start out with some medium paced down the line passes at the short line, then the dotted line and then the back corners.  I usually hit about ten on both sides, then I hit ceiling balls, pinches, serves, and then I finish up with some light stretching.

I think it is important to hit some shots and/or get on some machine to warm up before stretching. It may be detrimental to your muscles if you stretch your cold muscles before warming them up properly.

I have watched you play, and you seemed to have this game down to the basics. What is your secret?

Racquetball is a simple sport when you know the fundamentals, like bending your knees, keeping your eyes on the ball all the way to your target and back to your opponent, and the basic stroke mechanics. I suggest getting a book and/or dvd and watching the professional matches. You will soon discover that the pros just execute the basics to a very high level compare to amateurs. So, to answer the question - the secret is understanding and executing the fundamentals.
