Grip
Drills
All of the following drills are important to
getting the proper feel for the grip. They are valuable to experienced
players as a review and to beginners to ensure a proper foundation. To
reinforce the feel of the grip, swing the racquet each time without a
ball. Concentrate on the feel as you are swinging, and internalize the
proper feeling.
Frying Pan Drill
This drill will demonstrate to the player what an incorrect grip
feels like when he/she swings the racquet a few times without the ball.
Lay the racquet flat on the floor. Pick up the racquet
by the handle. Notice that the V between the thumb and the forefinger is
on the large flat side of the handle. This is an incorrect grip. Swing
the racquet at an imaginary ball and remember how it looks and feels to
have an incorrect grip. It makes everything tougher in racquetball to
hit a consistently hard low ball. Swing the racquet about ten times and
get the feel of what it feels like to have a bad grip.
Change Grip
It is important to change grip in racquetball to facilitate a
flat and level racquet face when contacting the ball. With or without a
partner, assume the forehand grip. Change grips back and forth two or
three times without looking. Stop and then check if you have proper the
proper grip for the intended shot.
