Improvement
Drills
Drop and Kill
This is probably the single most
effective self improvement exercise. Standing at midcourt and facing the
sidewall, drop the ball in front of the body at arm’s length and stroke
the ball to the front wall.
- Vary the height from
the floor at which you hit the ball, working towards hitting it fairly
close to the floor.
- Step into the ball
with the leg closest of the front wall, transferring the weight from the
rear to the forward foot.
- Snap the wrist at the
moment of contact.
- Rotate the hips and
upper body toward the front wall.
- Try to feel the rhythm
in the whole process, as in learning a dance step.
- Vary the speed of
execution, so that your reflexes can adapt to slightly different
situation within the same simple basic exercise. Remember-perfect
practices make perfect.
Back Corner Pick Up
This drill is designed for players with
little or no wrist snap and who have troubles digging the ball out of the back corners. Stand
facing either back corner. Gently toss the ball into the corner so that
it hits the back wall, sidewall, and floor in that sequence. Start with
a toss about four feet high and work down to one foot.
At the one foot
level the only way the ball will get to the front wall is with a strong
wrist snap. This wrist snap motion should feel very much like the wrist
does when you hit a nail with a hammer.
