Backcourt: The rear quarter of the court.

Backhand: The stroke that’s hit on the opposite side of the shooting arm.

Backhand Corner: Area of the court where a sidewall and the backwall meet on the same side as the player’s backhand.

Backhand Grip: The method of holding the racquet to execute a backhand shot. Basically rotating the grip one eight of an inch towards the front wall from the forehand grip.

Backspin: The reverse or backward rotation of the ball. Also called bottom spin.

Backswing: The part of the stroke in which the racquet is brought back behind the body in preparation for hitting the ball.

Backwall: The rear wall of the racquetball court.

Backwall Setup Gravity:  Backwall setups are usually dropping slightly at a curved trajectory due to gravity pulling down on it. Thus it is important to remember to time your swing to hit lower than the ball/backwall contact point. For example, if the ball contacts the backwall at 3 feet high, then the ball would caroms below this three feet line. For ceiling ball setups, the physics concept to understand and apply is that the ball is not only dropping with the pull of gravity, it is also coming down at a sharp angle as well.

Backwall Shot: Ball that is played off backwall and driven on the fly to the front wall.

Base: The butt end of the racquet handle.

BB: A shot that hits the front wall and caroms off the back wall and then hits the front wall again, without touching the floor. For information, see Dave Peck.

Big Boy Shot: A shot that was meant to be a pinch, but hits the crotch between the front and side walls and streaks out as a pass instead.

Block: The act of preventing your opponent from hitting the ball by using some part of your body.

Body language: Movement of the arms, torso, legs, prior to striking the ball, which might give a clue to the choice of shot.

Bottom Board: the lowest point on the front wall.

"B" Player: A player whose skill level is average or intermediate. Varies locally.

Brother-in-lawing: see in-lawing.

Bull: A type of player who prefers to hit everything hard and low with extreme power.

Bumper Guard: A protective covering attached to the rim of the racquet head.

Butt: The enlarged bottom end of the racquet handle.
