Linespeople: The referee’s two aides who are called upon to judge an
appeal call made by one of the players.
Live Ball: A ball in play or one that bounces exceptionally high.
Lob: A soft, defensive shot.
Lob Serve: A serve hit high and softly to the front wall that
rebounds in a high arc towards the backwall.
Lob Shot: Similar to the lob serve except that it is hit during a
rally. A shot used frequently in the 1970s and went out of style with
the advent of the faster and bouncier balls.
Lobitis: A player's profound fear of hitting the sidewall on
his/her service (ie. Z-serves).
Long Serve: A fault serve that rebounds from the front wall to the
backwall without hitting the floor.
Match: A contest that consists of winning two out of three games or
four out of seven games.
Match Point: The point that decides the outcome of a match.
Midcourt: The area of the court between the service line and the
receiving line.

Mixed Doubles: Doubles where a team of a female and male player play
another team also consisting of a female and a male player.

Non-Front Wall Serve: An illegally served ball that strikes any
surface of the court before hitting the front wall.
No Man’s Land: Area in a court where you do not want to be in
relation to the ball and the opponent.
Novice: A beginner or an unskilled player.
