Safety Hinder: When a player holds up the shot in order to avoid hitting an opponent with the racquet or ball. In such cases, the rally is replayed.

Safety Zone: The area between the restraining line and the short

Sandbagger:  An offensive/yet funny name for a strong racquetball players who plays at a lower division to win prizes against much lower rated oppositions.

Schooling: To get beaten so badly, that you actually took a lesson from your opponent.

Screened Ball: A ball that passes so close to the player during a rally or serve that the view of the returning side is obstructed.

Screened Serve: When the ball comes too close to the server’s body on its way back from the front wall, usually happens only on low drive serve. Close is approximately 16-18 inches from body.

Serve: The first shot of the rally.

Service Return: The first shot by the receiver.

Service Box: The area between the service line and the short line.

Service Line: The forward horizontal line, 15 feet from the front wall, which limits the server’s forward motion.

Service Zone: The area between and including the service and short lines.

Setup: A weak return of a shot that results in an easy opportunity for a player to hit the ball for a winner.

Shader: A player who overplays the return to one side or the other and thus can be beaten easily by a down the line drive going down the other sidewall.

Shadow Ball: See Screen Ball.

Shoot: To attempt to hit kill shots.

Shooter: A player who tries an unusually high percentage of kill shots, a killer or a gunner.

Short: See short serve.

Short hop: A shot or return of serve where the player contacts the ball on the rise immediately after it has bounced. Excellent timing and hand speed is required to execute.

Side by Side Formation: a system of doubles play in which the court coverage and responsibilities are assigned by dividing the racquetball court in half from the front wall to the backwall.

Side Out: Loss of Serve by a player or team.

Sidewall Huggers: Thos pesky and notorious recovering lane crowders that camp out on the sidewall usually during double games to illegally impede your shot.

Sidewall to Front wall kill shot: See pinch shot.

Singles: One player playing against another player.

Sister-in-lawing: see in-lawing.

Skip Ball: A kill shot attempt that hits the floor before the front wall.

Soft Shot: A softly stuck ball, usually used to return a retrievable kill shot, and aimed low into the front wall.

Splat: A shot that hits the sidewall close to the hitter and then hits the front wall for a winner.

Stew Over: Severe negative reaction to a defeat. Example: He stew over the loss for days and did not come back to the club for a whole week!

Straddle Ball: A ball that goes between the legs of a player.

Straight Kill: A kill shot that hits only the front wall.

Sunday Shot: A player's favorite shot, a shot that s/he will likely hit when they are in trouble.
