Ephedra*

What does 3-Andro Xtreme, BetaLean, Diet Boost, Diet Fuel, Energel, Herbal Phen Fen, Herbalife, Metabolife 356, Metacuts, Ripped Force, Ripped Fuel, Thermadrene, Trim Fast, Ultimate Energizer, Ultimate Orange, Utlra Chromaslim, Xenadrine RFA-1 and Yellow Jacket have in common?

These are all herbal supplements marketed as sport enhancing products that contain the dangerous and widely available herbal supplement Ephedra. Ephedra is also called by its Chinese name, Ma Huang.

Earlier this year, Baltimore pitcher Steve Bechler collapsed and died of heatstroke during spring training in Florida. The local coroner implicated ephedra as the cause of the 23 year’s old tragic death. Many experts labeled Ephedra as a drug because of its dramatic drug like effects on the body. It speeds the heart rate, constricts blood vessels, can raise blood level to dangerous levels and can often also causes severe life threatening dehydration.

Last year, a 16 year old high school linebacker from Illinois died of a heart attack after taking ephedra product he brought from a local gas station. Besides death, serious side effects can include stroke, severe liver and kidney problems, seizures, and psychosis. Minor side effects include such thing as nausea, diarrhea, and irregular heartbeat.

Also, because it’s considered a food supplement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, ephedra is unregulated and easy to find. It is in over the counter products available everywhere from the mall to the internet. And because it’s an herb, it’s often mistakenly considered harmless since it’s marketed as "natural," and thus, consumers assume it is also "safe to use."
