Breathe Racquetball

When you are in the middle of a match and finding yourself running out of breath and running out of power with each passing rallies, try this easy tip to increase your power and regain your composure:

Breathing slowly and purposefully while you play helps you to focus on playing one point at a time. This simple technique provides natural rhythm and improves stroke productivity and consistency.

On your groundstroke, take a breath as the ball bounces and exhale as you make contact and follow through. On the serve, breathe in as you toss, get a good, long look at the ball and then breathe out as you go to strike the ball and follow through.

This technique works for every shot in the great game of racquetball and other racquet sports like tennis and squash. For example, you can use this technique to hit volley and cutoffs, but the pace is faster so you will have to quicken your breathing.

The breathing technique works even better with grunting on every shot. Basically grunting is high level breathing where you take a big deep breathe and blow out all of your power and breath for the coming ball to crush it to smithereens! Grunting takes it to a more intense level of plays and will dramatically improve your racquetball game on every shot. You will see immediate results.

The pros apply this simple breathing technique to increase their stroke productivity with less effort: If you are observant of the top IRT pros breathing pattern, most of the top pros take a deep breath, relax, focus and then exhale powerfully as they vaporize the ball.

Watch any of the many Monchik vs. Swain U.S. Open Finals and watch how both of them breathe according to the inhale/exhale breathing technique. If you want a tennis example, watch the contingent of Russian women pros and also refer to tennis legend Monica Seles and her many grunting grand slam victories.

This breathing technique has been used in other sports as well like karate, ice hockey, running marathon and sprints, relays, rowing championships, baseball, soccer, chess, lacrosse, cross country skiing and the infamous Tour De France bike race.

The inhale/exhale breathing technique allows average athletes to become explosive hitter because they are leashing that natural "chi" energy that resides in each one of us.

So breathe in and breathe out, wax on, wax off and go break the ball on your next rally!
