Corner Q & A:
Mike Locker
McClayson: What is your favorite
moment or moments playing on the International Racquetball Tour?
Mike Locker:
There are so many to choose from it’s hard to be specific. I would
have to say making the semi finals of the US Open and having the
opportunity to have my likeness on ESPN. The travel is always enjoyable
going to different cities and meeting all kinds of interesting people.
The downside was coming home and doing laundry!
MM:
What is it like playing
against the likes of Swain, Ellis and Monchik?
ML:
When I first began playing
full time in 2000, it was tough due to the lack of “IRT” experience.
Once I had a few good wins in hand, the confidence level grew. Next
thing you know, I made my first IRT final taking out #1 ranked Monchik
in the 16’s, then #6 ranked Doyle in the qtrs, #4 ranked Mike Ray in the
semi’s and eventually receiving an all education bashing by #2 ranked
Swain.
John Ellis has
always seemed to have my number except in one event – the US Open where
I was fortunate to take him out in a 5 game battle that eventually put
me in the semi finals. My personal resume can claim sweet victories over
the likes of Swain, Monchik, Ellis, Doyle, Guidry, Fowler, Ray, Beltran
and Huczek (when he was an entry level pro of course).
Bottom line is
that it was an awesome experience and on any given day, a full time IRT
Pro has a shot at the title. You must be prepared to fight hard for 4
days.
