Pro Corner Q & A:  Mike Locker

MM:    In your own professional opinion from playing with some of the most talented Minnesota pro’s, who would you say gave you the most competition and the most troubles? Granberg? Frautschi? Dan Ferris?

ML:   Well, let me think about that for a moment! I would have to say back in the days when Bruce Erickson was in town.

Bruce and I played in probably 30+ Open finals over a couple of years and I was fortunate to win about 90% of the time but all of our matches were tight battles. It is hard to be accurate because there is such a jump from local pro’s to IRT pro’s.

When you play locally, there is not much to compete for other than bragging rights and some chump change so your “A” game really is never present.

It makes it difficult to state an opinion on the local scene of today. If you dig up a little history on the last 3 state titles I won, you will find that I gave up less than 25 total points between all three years and spent maybe an hour and half of total playing time (including warm-ups)…

That was the one tournament each year that I come to play in full force!

MM:    Who do you think will be your heir apparent besides the very talented Granberg?

ML:   I would like to think Jake Bredenbeck if he continues to pursue racquetball. He is very talented and has great potential as long as he gets rid of his old man’s cutter crap…his dad (Bill) and I used to play matches where we could only hit cutter/spin balls…he never could beat me no matter how hard he tried! Unfortunately Jake picked up the cutter watching his dad and I think that he uses it too much at this stage of his game. He will realize this as he grows older and wiser.
