Interview with Doc McClayson

Cindy Kitchen: Doc Marcus McClayson, it’s good to have you in the Velocity Racquetball Pro Am Tour studio with us! Welcome!

VRB Fans: Doc! Doc! Doc!

Doc MM: Please Cindy, call me McClayson.

CK: First off McClayson, please explain how you got your name McClayson.

MM: Well, initially my racquetball name was Marcus Clay. Clay being a substance that can adapt to any container/opponent’s game styles. Then I added the prefix "Mc" for all the fantastic Irish and Scottish players I play with and then I added the suffix, "Son," for all the Norwegians players I crossed racquetball swords with. My middle initial is Vladimir-Huang for my Russian and Asian friends.

CK: Wow Doc, thanks for that illuminating explanation! Way cool Doc!

MM: Thanks beautiful.

CK: (blushing): You’re welcome. Now how did you come about the name Doc?

MM:  It came out of a Forum discussion where I described T-Man as Wyatt Earp and I’m his shotgun carrying sidekick, Doc Holliday, thus the name Doc stuck.

CK: You are full of surprises! Now Doc, tell the fans how you started playing racquetball?

MM:  Cindy, I was literally a hack when I started playing racquetball sometimes in 1996 at the University of Minnesota. I got to play with the U of M’s racquetball team and met some great people, like John Hui, James Quan, Joel Gainsley, Andy Nelson, Allan the army guy, Sui Chi, Big Bill, super fast Scott Dahl, Dave Haas, Travis Grey, Sahab Matin, Buck, and female pro, Dana Anderson, the top ranked Minnesota pro, Aaron Granberg. It was a nice beginning.

CK: Didn’t you start playing and learning the game when you took a class on racquetball?

MM: Yeah, that’s right Cindy, thanks for reminding me. I took a class about racquetball taught by the super calm and religious Mr. Ross. He was a super cool dude, but I learned next to nothing in his class.

CK: Why not?

MM: It was a good class, I guess my mind wasn’t ready for the racquetball knowledge yet, until the famed Olympic racquetball coach Fran Davis and her racquetball camps came along in 2000!
