Advances in Service Drives

Here are 12 tips to improve your drive serve to an advanced level.

1. Step, drop, raise racquet to shoulder level, hit, follow through completely.

2. Start low by bending your knees, bending slightly at the waist, head down, eyes on the ball, stay low, finish low. Then take 1-2 steps to center court and turn sideway to watch return.

3. Keep the ball toss away from your body for maximum power. Extension equals power.

4. Keep the ball drop low, out in front, like you are petting your dog, and away from your body.

5. Four keys to an effective drive serves: Deception, Angle, Variety or creativity, and Power.

6. Use a two steps motion to generate more force behind your shot.

7. Step diagonally into the serve to get the most from your lower body.

8. Swing hard and fast through the ball. More Velocity = More Force = More powerful drive serve.

9. Raise the racquet higher above the shoulder for greater power.

10. Have a mental goal of what serve you will attempt before you hit it and then execute (also called visualization).

11. Believe in your service motion. Have supreme confidence.

12. Do not try for an ace serve all the time. It's not attainable and unrealistic. Instead, use your serve to force a weak return you can put away on the third shot.
