ABC ' s of Drive Serve Return
Point C : First bounce
MM has gathered a lot of information on the ball’s path from
point A to B. MM’s reads have obtain the ball’s approximate velocity,
angles, height, approach and possible path of the ball (z-serve, jam, or
v-drives?).
At point C, MM pays attention to the ball’s first bounce:
If the ball’s first bounce is close to the short line and
sufficiently far from the left sidewall, then MM will anticipate a good two
bounces corner drives (move quickly!).
If the ball’s first bounce is closer to the left sidewall, MM
can read and determine if it will jam him or not. If so, MM will move his
position to the right.
If the ball’s first bounce is deep in the left corner, but
sufficiently far enough from the left sidewall, the MM can anticipate a
wallpaper drive shooting towards the front wall. Then MM would need to play
closer to the dotted line and take bigger steps to wait for the ball to careen
quickly off the backwall.
So, depending on the ball’s first and second bounce, height,
velocity, spins, and distance to the sidewall, MM will adjust his return
position and tactics.
Basically, point D and F are for serves where the ball bounces
deep on its first bounce and whether or not the ball will come off the sidewall
and backwall and where?
