Service Return
Playing the Percentage

In moving to the serve, your first step can be a crossover or a shuffle with the feet closest to the side wall. It is a matter of preference based on each individual's taste. Just make sure that your first step is not too large that it leaves you off balance or too close to the side wall. Large steps usually do not allow you to use your hips and legs and you will end up muscling the swing with your arm.

Reading the server is one major skill that the returner can use to anticipate the upcoming serves. Many people, who play regularly at the club or recreational level do a lot of talking with their bodies. You can learn to read this "body language" by looking for little idiosyncrasies and tendencies. If you have a chance, scout out your opponent before a match.

And once you know what is coming, or think you know, the rule is: Anticipate, don't commit.

It's okay to lean a smidgen or two in one direction, or to be thinking about playing what you believe will be a Power Z, but don't commit. If you do, you won't be able to recover and return the unexpected serve. Remember, a good server will also be watching your body language too.
