Return
Playing the Percentage
5.
Special situations, the two-walled returns. At the most basic levels,
you want to stay away from two-wall returns until you've mastered
one-wall play. But there are times when using two walls is advisable.
For example if your opponent is playing deep in the court, or leans a
lot on his heels, waiting for kills and passes, that's when you would
mix in a side wall/front wall pinch. Basically, to hit a pinch shot,
very little changes in your stroke mechanics.
Only your body and ball
position change. You want your front shoulder to move toward the
proper corner (stepping in that direction with your front foot will do
the trick, and you want to contact the ball slightly back in the power
zone. This cause the ball to travel to the side at which you are
aiming.
Aim for the small area within 1 foot from the front corner.
You can pinch the ball either way, but the ball stays closer to the
front wall if you hit the side wall first. As amateur, we should play
the percentage and use the sidewall/front wall combination.
Concentrate on that 1-foot away area. Because the farther you move
away from the corners, the greater the angle and the farther the ball
will come back into center court for a delicious setup for your
opponent camped out in center court.
