Returning Corner Drive Serves

The most important thing to remember about the returning the corner drive is to read and anticipate the serve quickly. Then react quickly before the high velocity ball takes two bounces to the back corner. You have to move and react as soon as the ball is hit because you do not have time to wait for it to cross the short line due to its high velocity nature. The key words are “anticipate but do not commit.”

I like to use a light bounce to jumpstart my body motion. When the server almost make contact with the ball, I stop moving and quickly get into my low and set position. I prepare to move quickly to the designated side. Depending on the ball’s height and first bounce, I will pivot to that side. Take either a smaller or larger first step out, then the cross over step. Hit the ball while at a stride into the ball for power, if given time.

If the serve is fast and time is limited, I adjust my footwork and hit the best return under the circumstances. Then, I relocate to center court quickly to watch the returner at a 45 degree to them, with a backhand grip in defensive coverage.

If the server is hitting consecutive winners, I will adjust my position slightly forward, maybe one to two feet to decrease the service angle and distance (and make it easier to reach).
