Service Return
Body + Court Positions
Take a position one to two racquet
lengths from the backwall, midway between the two sidewall, you may
shade over slightly to the backhand side if your opponent is hitting the
majority of his serves over to that side, knees are bent and assume a
low stance, backhand grip, hold your racquet between knee and waist
height for the shortest backswing distance and quickest return, upper
body is slightly flexed at the waist, shoulders are parallel to the
front wall, arms are partially bent, if the server is hitting hard
drives, then move forward up to cut off angles and decrease distance
between yourself and the server.
Important reminders
- Be light on your feet (an object
in motion will stay in motion).
- Watch the server for habits and
tendencies.
- Use the two quickest return
footwork patterns: (1) Pivot, crossover, step out, cross over or (2)
Pivot, step out, and cross over step.
- Stay down and level throughout
your return for consistency and powerful returns.
- Move, set, and hit the ball is
the ideal return sequence, but often you will not have enough time.
Learn to adjust and adapt to the changing situations quickly!
- Two high percentage returns are
the ceiling-return and the pass-return. Both will pull the server deep
and allows you to control center court.
- Attack mediocre serves with
aggressive shooting to put pressure on server.
- Mix up your returns to keep the
server honest in coverage.
- React to the service as soon as
or before the ball is hit. If you wait until the ball hits the
frontwall or cross the service line to begin moving, it will be too
late for most hard low drives.
- Be mentally relaxed, yet focused
and know your own abilities and limitations. Be confident with your
returns and hit the highest percentage shots possible.
