Attacking Defense
Factors

An Attacking Defensive Coverage Scheme

  • The type of shot you have hit.
  • Where your opponent will be hitting.
  • What type of shot s/he will likely attempt?
  • The opponent’s capabilities and tendencies with that shot.

  • - Advanced players know that they cannot lock into one defensive setup whenever their opponent is going low zone.

    - Vary your defensive coverage and try to cover as many shots as possible from a position that floats from 22 - 30 feet back towards the backwall, midway between the sidewall, and shaded slightly to the opponent’s side to cover the down the line. This is often referred to as the floating center. See court diagrams4

    - The cross court pass is a longer distance shot and the defense has more time to track down such a shot.

    - If driven out of this coverage area, it is imperative to fight to get back in after your shot. For example: A misdirected shot that forces you to move aside and open up hitting lanes for the opponent, you need to return to zone coverage the moment the ball passes.

    - Sometime, top players ‘cheat’ in their coverage by anticipating the opponent’s predictable shot.
