The versatile and lethal cross court
passing game is key staple of the modern power
racquetball arsenal.
During one of his many practices,
McClayson realized that he needed to work on his cross
court passes. Like most amateurs, he assumed that he had
a good down the line passing shot. So naturally he
thought that all he had to do was moved the ball's
contact point further up for a good cross court pass.
MM found out the hard trial and error
way that this was far from the truth. The cross court
passes were hitting too close to the opposite sidewall
and nicking the opposite sidewall and caroming either
into center as setups or coming off the backwall deep as
plums!?
MM went to work on correcting (and
revitalizing) his cross court passing technique/game. He
began by adding the cross court pass as part of his
practices and warm ups. He would hit all down the line
passes first and then go back and hit two cross court
passes at six key locations.
MM realized the importance of keeping
his cross court passing game sharp for several reasons:
1. The
Cross Court Passing Game keeps adds variety to your
passing game. This means that your opponent can't
shade to one side and covers your down the line shots.
He needs to cover both sides of the court!
2. The CC
Passing Game opens up your down the line passing game.
When you are effectively hitting cross court passes,
some of your opponents might start to lean towards the
opposite sidewall to anticipate your CC pass and that's
when you throw them a monkey wrench and rip a down the
line pass right past them for an easy winner!!
