The average
racquetballer screams in angst, "I need serious help with my game, not a fortune cookie."
The elite
racquetball athlete knows that to play racquetball at the top level is
to stop aiming, stop thinking about the physical aspects of the game
during a game.
Work on the physical aspects of the game during your
practices. It’s like you wouldn’t practice aiming in a real gun fight,
you just take cover and shoot away! When you just play your game and
flow during the game without much thought, then you have arrived at or
are very close to the echelon of the racquetball fun ship. Believe it or
not, there is such a thing as Over Focus, what is commonly called in
special forces gun training classes as "Tunneling and over focusing on
one object."
This over focusing is dangerous and very bad for your game
because you are only focused on, for example, one shot to win it all,
and forgets about your opponent’s positioning and that’s a big
racquetball no-no. One such player that McClayson has much admiration
for her diligent practices and love of the game is Marlene Righty. But
when McClayson observe her play, he finds her over-focus and misses many
easy balls. She has all the tools to become an excellent player, but her
tunnel vision limits her on court performance.
Whereas, a rip it and ask
questions later player like Terry Lefty is tough to beat, because TL
just flow with the game and rips everything in sight. And some of his
stroke are racquetball fundamental ugly step sister form, he gets the
job done with a smooth efficient flow to his game. It’s like in art, if
you draw the negative space around the object, the object will draw
itself. In fighting, if you flow and let the chi flows naturally, you
will find yourself hitting with more power and accuracy and you can take
more pain pound for pain. The bottom line: Just get in there and enjoy
yourself, the result will come.
