Battle Plans
Before you play any match you’ve got to have a tactical game plan. The
more mapped out the better – you don’t want any doubts about what to do on
the courts. Questioning which shots you should be hitting at certain times
is the cause of many errors. The more decisive you are, the better you’ll
execute your shots. When you step to the line to serve on a break point you
should know exactly where you want to put it and not change your mind while
the toss is in the air.
If you play matches on a regular basis you should already have a style
that suits your strengths and minimizes your weaknesses. Before the start of
each season, it’s a good idea to reassess your style to make sure it still
works. Create a checklist of what you do and don’t do well. This will help
you formulate a primary plan of attack. I say "primary" because to win
consistently you’re going to need three plans.
Let’s take my game, for example:
Plan A
for me is to serve ….. If this is working, I’m going to
ride it to the finish line. But if my opponent is punishing my second
serve and passing me too often, I’ll have to modify it. Just a slight
adjustment, nothing too drastic.
Perhaps I’ll stay back on …
be more selective about ….This should be my
Plan B going in to the match. I
still play to my strengths, but I temper my game plan to adjust to the
opponent. Now, if I’m playing someone who has all the answers to what I am
throwing at him, then I’ve got to resort to Plan C.
Most times, when you
have to turn to Plan C, you’re done for. But when it’s desperation time, and
you might just turn the tables. For me, I’ll have to be successful at
lobbing….defense and error-free. It may not be the offensive game I prefer
to play, but at least I’m trying to find another way to win.
