Faking

Swain demonstrated effective usage of the faking technique in his U.S. Open Championship match with Jason Manino in 1999. He showed us that the faking technique is applicable and easily transferable. Swain was able to trick Manino into deeper coverage because he pump faked another ceiling ball return and go pinch. This kept Manino honest in his court position by forcing Jason to back peddling to cover the pinch, expecting another ceiling ball, but only to be caught in the middle of a direction change. I observed that even though Swain occasionally pinches shots high and wide, he usually catches Manino by surprise, misposition and heading in the wrong direction.

Another example is the 1996 US Open Championship match between Sudsy and Roberts. This match illustrates superb head fakes by Sudsy as he directs his shots towards the other direction. Legendary racquetball champion Dave Peck also made use of misdirection and miscues. Peck used to fake one position and tiptoed his massive Texan frame to cover a different position to manipulate optimal power zone advantage.
