Mental Game:
High Percentage Shot Off a Ceiling Backwall
In general, amateurs view all backwall setup
shots as tough shots to handle. This is especially true for the ceiling ball
type, where the ball is also coming off the backwall at a slant angle and at
the same time, it is also traveling towards the front wall. These variables
make it tough to get into position quickly and get a fix on the ball’s
trajectory and final position.
But we have to remember that racquetball is
one of the few racquet sports, where you can let the ball go past you and
play it off the backwall and thus, developing the ability to shoot effective
high percentage shots off these setups is an essential skill of improving in
racquetball. This skill is the very hallmark of an advanced racquetball
player.
I have to come to use the T-Ball analogy to demonstrate how to hit high
percentage shots off setups. Basically T-Ball is a children game where a
ball is placed on a stationary target (V=0) and the child is not encumbered
with the ball’s variables and can work on his/her swing mechanics and crush
the ball at will. If you look at the backwall ball, it is just like T-Ball,
where the ball is coming off the backwall and before it bounces on the floor
again, there is V=0.
It is important to learn and develop the ability to
consistently shoot effective shots off backwall balls because the backwall
ball is one of the few opportunities in racquetball where you hit a ball off
a setup. The ability to hit offensive high percentage shots off the backwall
is the major difference between an intermediate player and the advanced
racquetball player. From my experience, my development and improvement of
this skill has allowed me to advance to the next level of play and have
resulted in fair successes against higher rated players.
