Racquetball Priorities
- beginner level -

1. After every shot, including your service, relocate to the center box and turn at a 45 degree angle to watch your opponent. This will increase your abilities to get to more of your opponent’s shots because you’re centrally positioned and watching your opponent on every shot will increase your anticipation time.

2. Hit more high percentage passes to get your opponent deep, so you can control center court and dictate the rally. There is a negative tendency for many amateur, all the way up the ‘A’ level to hit too many pinches and leaving way too many setups up.

The high percentage thinking is: Pass and stick your opponent deep and then hit a succinct pinch off a setup. The IRT pros use the Pass-Pinch Tactic effectively on a daily basis. The flashy shots and four walls pinch rolled outs may impress the fans for one or two rallies, but in the long runs, the numbers will catch up with you.

3. Don't poke your shots when you're in the front court. It is important to learn to always hit a solid stroke with a complete follow through, even on your softer shots.

For example, if you are hitting a front court shot forward of the service box, don’t attempt to poke a soft kill shot, this is actually a more difficult shot to hit and an easier shot for your opponent to cover, instead hit a hard and low wide angled pass to pin your opponent deep, so you can relocate to center court to cover.

4. If you want to advance to the top ‘A’ level of amateur racquetball, you must develop sound fundamentals of how to consistently and effectively stroke the ball on both wings, forehand and backhand. Another key fundamental area to work on diligently is shooting high percentage shots off the backwall setups.
