Day Before Routine
When I was watching the latest U.S. Open
Racquetball Open Finals between super-speed offensive-demon, Kane W.
vs. Big Derek Robinson, I noticed that both of them apply the same
routine to their service games.
KW would go through the same service routine
consisting of hitting the ball against the front wall in the middle
about five times, then he hits the ball around the two sidewalls, and
then he get into his service stance and bounces the ball a few more
times before serving.
Big D used a similar service routine to establish a
service/game rhythm and takes all 15 seconds to visualize the serve and
slow down Kane’s faster game style of plays.
I think to take this one step further and suggest that
the entire day before the big match that you establish the same routine
for those big game days.
For example, I like to play on Tuesdays and Thursdays
and on those racquetball days, I try to stay with the same routine
consisting of the following:
1. Work during the day 2. Do my daily light weights of
10-25 pounds barbells at my company Ingenix Exercise room at 10am sharp
to about 10:20am, 3. Have a light lunch,
4. On my second break, I sit and close my eyes and
visualize a complete perfect racquetball game where I give someone a big
fat Donut up to 11 points or I replay my last game and mentally correct
several stroking and positional errors, 4. A slow drive home with
classical and country music driving in the right lane of traffic, 5.
Have a light dinner,
6. Vacuum and clean the house to work on my discipline
some more, 7. Go through my stretching out routine, 8. Go through my
daily 10 minutes racquetball shadow stroke routine, and 9. Recheck to
make sure I have everything I need in the racquetball bag and slowly
make my way to my truck for the trip to the health club with a
deliberate and focused mindset for racquetball.
Please notice that all of my routines and the routines
of the top pros like Robinson and Waslenchuk takes only a few minutes at
most. I am a strong believer in doing something of a high quality
everyday. Eventually the ‘Accumulation Effect’ will increase your
physical and mental racquetball skills.
